Who Will win ICC Champions Trophy 2009 ?

ICC Champions Trophy is set to start from 22 October 2009 in South Africa (fixtures). Eight top cricket teams will take part in the event. As there are no minnows, it is possible that anyone can win the Champions trophy 2009. Eight teams will battle in two groups with 4 in each, two from each advance to semis and finally the final will be held.

Group A: Australia , India, Pakistan and West Indies
Group B: Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England and South Africa

Australia, India, Pakistan and West Indies are grouped in group A. Australia is the defending champions and as we all know it has ruled the ODI cricket for years. Aussies have a great chance of winning but their recent form is not very good. India on the other hand has been in great form in ODI cricket. Pakistan won the T20 World cup and are totally unpredictable. They are great contenders too. West Indies won the Champions Trophy in 2005 and was finalist last time. They are also unpredictable.

On Group 2,there is expected to be a great competition. South Africa is great in ODI cricket. Sri Lanka is also a strong team and so are England and New Zealand.

Please vote in the poll at the left side and if you want to say more put your comment. Write comments saying why a team can win or loose.

Pietersen blow hands some initiative back to Aussies

It was perhaps not surprising after seeing him limp around the field at Lords last weekend that Kevin Pietersen has finally succumbed to the achilles injury that has dogged him since the start of the year.

The arguments about his fitness will no doubt rumble on over the summer; after all it was first diagnosed during the winter tour of the West Indies and could have been cured there and then. But despite being centrally contracted to England he went off to South Africa to play in the IPL carrying the knock. In what I expect to become the norm in the near future test cricket has now lost out to 20/20 with Pietersen unable to play through the pain barrier any longer. England will now hope their other talisman, Andrew Flintoff, will be wrapped up in cotton wool ready for Edgbaston next week.

The obvious replacement for Pietersen is Ian Bell who has been in good nick with his county Warwickshire so far this year. But he still has a question mark over his ability to perform at the highest level. His average in Ashes tests is only 25, and he has often been found vulnerable to Australias sledging tactics out in the middle.

But the Aussie attack, while dangerous, is not as formidable as it once was and if Bell is in good nick he may look to grab this chance with both hands.

Australia will take a boost from Pietersens enforced absence. It puts a dampener on Englands celebrations after the Lords test and shifts the momentum slightly as there is no question Englands batting line-up will be weaker without the enigmatic South African. That said he was clearly half fit in the first two tests and didnt perform to his best in either of them, so England will argue they will be stronger in the remaining games as they will be playing with 11 men rather than 10 .
I suppose it will just give both sides another excuse to exchange mind game tactics ahead of the hotly anticipated third test at Edgbaston next week.

In the meantime, keep a close eye on the Third Test odds before placing your Edgbaston test bet and, if you need to get in the mood for rivalry, check out Betfair's fan v fan site.

Ashes 2009 : Pietersen ruled out due to injury

England key player Kevin Pietersen will miss the upcoming Ashes matches for Ashes 2009. KP has to miss due to his long-standing Achilles tendon surgery his Wednsday. News is that Pietersen has to take the rest for about six weeks.

The news might bring England a great shock after the 75-years history was broken in the last Ashes match. Pietersen is always known as the key batsman since his appearance on the International level for England. As he is not at great knick this Ashes but he has a geat career record against the Australians. In his 12 matches he has scored more tht 1100 runs with average above 50.

Already England's coach Andy Flower expressed that his team can win without start players like KP and Flintoff. According to him his team has done great acheivement since they broke the 75 years tally in last test.

The outgoing of Kevin Pietersen will might bring Ian Bell back on the Eng squad. Bell has been out for some time due to lack of scoring. But his recent form in domestics have been great for Warwickhire.

Ashes 2009 2nd Test : Australia in danger of follow on after day 2

I think its all the end of Day 2 of 2nd Test in Ashes 2009. At the moment its the cause of bad light and the match is only delayed but very less chanc of players going down to the pitch. The day went fully to england and the match is also going towards them. After the overnight score of 364-6, England were ruled out by Australia on 425 before some play remained in the 1st session of day 1.

It was only the 1st some hours on the day 2 where Australia would have felt better but than came the worse part after the came down with bat. Aussies have to loose 2 wickets for 20 runs till lunch. Then they were never in the match. At the end of 3rd session or the day Australia were 156-8.

Anderson came hard against all the Aussie batters. He picked up 4-36 in the day. Onions, Flintoff and Broad equally supported Anderson with some wickets on their bag.

Australia might follow on on the Day 3 and pretty difficult task for the World Champions. Here is the final scorecard at the end of day 2:

Ashes 2009 - England Vs Australia 2nd test at Lords - live

After a dramatic draw in first test, two giants will battle in Lords for the second test of Ashes 2009. Though the Flintoff retirement has created a lot of hype in the world of cricket, both teams will concentrate on this particular match. Australia are quite disappointed that the first test though dominated by them couldn't be won. In one view, as Aussies were dominating the rhythm is with them while other may think that the morale of England is high with such a brave finish.

Match details: England Vs Australia - 2nd test of Ashes 2009
Date: 16 th July, 2009. Time: 11:00 (local), 10:00 GMT, 15:30 in India

The big challege for England is that Australians were defeated in Lords only once and that too way back in 1934. Flintoff injury is a big concern for which Harmisson may be in. Similarly, England may opt to drop an spinner which is likely to be Monty Panesar for whom Graham Onions is likely to be the replacement. Talking fairly, England are the underdogs for the match.

On other side, Aussies may come unchanged as Brett Lee is still unfit and they have been backing their decisions to drop Stuart Clark. Hilfenhaus and Johnson will continue their role in the team. Finally, another big thing about the match is that Ricky Ponting just requires 65 runs to break the record of Allan Border of being the top scorer for Australia in tests.

Gambhir moves to no.1 in ICC test ranking

Gautam Gambhir has climbed up to no.1 in ICC test batting rankings after failure of Mohammad Yousuf. Yousuf who was at top is now in no. 5 due to failure in second test against Sri Lanka. With this, Gambhir has become the first Indian in about 4 years to top the ICC test batting rankings. In ODI batting rankings too, there is another Indian i.e MS Dhoni in top. So, both ODI and test batting rankings are headed by India.

Talking about the test batting ranking, Younis Khan is in second place followed by Sangakkara and Chanderpaul. Gambhir is the only Indian to be in top 10 in test batting ranking. In ODI ranking, MS Dhoni is followed by his team-mate Yuvraj Singh at no.2. V Sehwag is at no.7. Dale Steyn leads the test bowling ranking while its still Kulasekara at the top of ICC ODI bowling ranking. Bhajji and Zaheer are in top 10 in test bowling ranking from India while no bowlers are ranked top 10 from India in ODI.

Complete ranking available here.

Ashes 2009 : England hold on for dramatic draw in 1st test

In a year where the future of test cricket has been brought into question as it battles against the Twenty/20 juggernaut, the dramatic finish at Cardiff proved there is life in the old dog yet.

England supporters were once again put through the emotional mill as their side toiled in the face of some steadfast batting from Australia on Friday and Saturday. As they established a healthy first innings lead and put England in twenty minutes before tea on day four, I am sure I wasnt alone in feeling a sense of dread. Our worst fears were realised as England were reduced to 20-2 at the break. Thankfully, and crucially, the Welsh weather intervened and wiped out a final session which surely would have given Australia the extra time needed to polish off the England batting line-up.

That said, they nearly didnt need it as at Sunday lunchtime the odds on a draw were long to say the least. With 70 overs remaining England were 70-5, thirty overs later they were 159-7 and the subdued crowd were contemplating a heavy, humiliating and all too familiar inning defeat at the hands of the old enemy.

But the British love an underdog, a fighter, a man defying the odds. On Sunday that man was Paul Collingwood, whose brave five hour innings dragged his side back into the game and gave hope to the awakening crowd. He was ably assisted by Graeme Swann who hit a handy 31. But when Collingwoods heroic innings was finally brought to an end, bringing last man Monty Panesar to the crease, there were still over 11 overs left to be bowled.

An unlikely batting hero as you would ever see, Monty survived alongside James Anderson, with the crowd living and breathing each ball they blocked out. As Ponting and Anderson shook hands, signalling the end of the game, the huge cheer that ran round the stadium was reminiscent of the famous 2005 series, even if the performance wasnt.

Make no mistake, England got away with it and were not far away from a crushing loss. But this Australian side, while still world class, is not what it once was. I feel the likes of Warne and McGrath would not have let this opportunity slip from their grasp.

The test may have ended in a draw but it was a psychological victory for England who could, and perhaps should, have lost. But the fact they avoided defeat, in such spectacular and dramatic circumstances, could give them crucial momentum as they prepare to do it all over again at Lords.

Make sure you keep up-to-date with the Lord's Test odds ahead of any Lord's Test betting and take a look at Betfair's new fanvfan site for some more good old-fashioned rivalry!

ICC cricket rankings / ratings

ICC, the cricket's governing body has a system of rankings in cricket for teams as well as players. The rankings are calculated by teams / players performance providing ratings using statistical formula. Though even the ICC has itself agreed that rankings are not the complete measure of greatness of team or players, rankings have many times been burning topics in the world of cricket.

ICC Team rankings:

ICC provides team rankings for both ODI and test cricket by providing ratings points. Australia has been in no.1 since the establishment of test rankings. About ODI, Australia's dominance in ranking has been challenged by South Africa. On the end of a year, the top team is awarded with ICC test or ODI championship award.

ICC Player Rankings:

ICC has provided batsmen rankings, bowlers rankings and all-rounder rankings for test and ODI cricket. For T20 its still to be made. ICC has following players rankings:

Test Player ranking
  • Test Batsman ranking
  • Test bowler ranking
  • Test all-rounder ranking
ODI player ranking:

  • ODI batsmen ranking
  • ODI bowler ranking
  • ODI all-rounder ranking.

Rankings are calculated on basis of its complex statistical system. You can view the rankings here.

India VS West Indies 3rd ODI 2009 - Live

After the first and second ODI being gone to each of the teams, the third ODI in 4-match ODI series is going to decide who will not be the looser in the series. Seeing the first and second ODI, West Indies seem to be better with contributions from most of the players in each form of cricket. West Indies has got good opening with the bat with Gayle and Morton. The bowling which seemed off the target in first ODI improved a great extent in the second one.

West Indies v India - 3rd ODI at Gros Islet
Date: Jul 3 Match time: 09:30 local, 13:30 GMT,

India has now problems in opening with both bat and ball. Gautam Gambhir in some recent matches has stuggled. In absence of Sehwag another genuine opener required. Dhoni and Yuvraj are in good touch but rest seem to be struggling. Bowling is nowhere praise worthy. Ishant Shama, Praveen Kumar and RP Singh are not able to provide quick breakthroughs in the top and spinners too have not been so impressive.

For third ODI, Gambhir must come back to the form and either Yuvraj or Dhoni must lead the innings if India are to make a good impression with the bat. For bowling extras must be minimized and the openers must make definite strategy against Gayle.
