Ashes 2009 : Spin battle centre of Ashes build-up

It is perhaps ironic that in the first Ashes series in more than 15 years without Shane Warne, undoubtedly the best spinner of his generation, the spinning ball would be the centre of attention as the war of words gathers pace ahead of the much anticipated 2009 Ashes series.

The arguments began when rumors spread about the likelihood of Cardiff�s pitch, the location of the opening test on July 8th, being kind to spin.

England, with Graeme Swann ably supported by Adil Rashid or Monty Panesar, could go with a twin spin attack against the Aussies, maximizing the advantage. The tourists, however, only have one spinner in their ranks, Nathan Hauritz, who is relatively inexperienced with only four tests under his belt.

He had the chance to respond in Hove this week as the tourists warmed-up for the opener in less than three weeks. However Hauritz struggled, limping to 0-98 off 18 overs. Australia have since gone on a charm offensive with coach Tim Nielsen claiming a twin spin attack from England will pile the pressure on them rather than the tourists. Ricky Ponting also waded in, claiming he has plenty of men in his line-up who can tweak a ball or too.

Also this defensive talk from the Aussies is very encouraging from an English point of view; however we mustn�t be over confident. Away from spin they still have an imposing pace quartet of Siddle, Lee, Clark and Hilfenhaus, and after all didn�t people predict a tight and competitive series in 2006/07?

England can perhaps claim the first moral victory in what is only a preview to the main event next month. But far tougher challenges lie ahead and once that first ball is bowled in anger, all the chat and banter spoken beforehand will be forgotten.

The most common thing is the opener and left-handed batsmans, the great hitters of cricket ball Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya. Tilakratne Dilsan's batting can be compared to the Bravo's batting. And the two shringers Edwards and Malinga would be the another interesting factor to watch because its all for fun. No matter who wins but the great competition will be mustly expected between this two teams. But its the matter for the captainsto go the toss on the final. Pakistan in the finals of T20 World Cup 2009

Pakistan have placed them successfully in the finals of ICC World Twenty20 2009. Pakistan defeated the South Africa by 7-runs in the 1st semi-final played in Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Thursday (click here for H/L Video). This is the second time in the two T20 World Cup played till now, Pakistan have been to the finals. Last time Pakistan were in the finals at South Africa on 2007 where they were defeated by India by a small margin.

Talking about the Pakistan recent form it seems to have lots of ups and downs. But Pakistan looks always a strong side and they are the favorite in the 20 over format games. During the initial phases to the T20 series in England Pakistan seemed to be struggling. Losing both the warm-up matches Pakistan had a poor start in the tournament where they lost against the host England in their first group stage match. But they comeback well and fight for the super 8 position.

Same thing on Super eight stage, Pakistan were trembling badly in the initial match and pressure on winning the rest of two matches. Thanks a lot to their great performance against the New Zealand and Ireland which made their way in the semis of ICC World Twenty20 2009. Then, Pakistan faced the unbeaten team in the tournament i.e., South Africa in the final. Pressure built match for the teams.

Indian team selected for West Indies tour 2009

Indian team has been selected for the 4-match ODI in West Indies. Some new faces are given chances for the West Indies tour which will start from 26th June, 2009. Ashish Nehra will be back in the Indian team after a long gap. Abhishek Nayar who was brilliant in IPL 2009 is the new man in. Murali Vijay, who has appeared in 1 test for India is another new face in the Indian squad. Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan has been rested.

Abhishek Nayar is an all-rounder from Mumbai. He is an attacking left handed batsman and a right handed medium fast bowler. In IPL 2009, he played for Mumbai Indians where is was excellent with the bat and ball. Some Indian fans were disappointed not finding him in the ICC World T20 2009 team.

Murali Vijay is a right handed batsman and had played in test match in Australia in 2008. His performance in the match was not very good which made him dropped from Indian team. He played for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2009.

Ashish Nehra is 30 year fast bowler who has played 17 tests and 72 ODI for India. Around 2001, he emerged as a promising player in Indian team and was great in 2003 world cup. But injuries and inconsistency made him out of the team from 2005. In IPL 2009 he played for Mumbai Indians and was one of the best bowlers of IPL.

ICC World Twenty20 2009 hosted in England is now near to the semi-final stage. Lots of action have gone passed away in the 1st round and super eight matches played till now. Disappointment for some teams and great achievement for some other teams. All the four teams for the semi-final spot has been confirmed and they are South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan.

South Africa and West Indies are the teams which were qualified from the Group E of Super 8. From Group F, Pakistan came tyhe first one that was qualified from the group whereas Sri Lanka qualified as the group topper from the Group F. Strongly Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand in the last match of Group F.

Till now lots of action came through in England as cricket giants Australia had to move out of tournament in without winning any matches from its group stages. From the Group stages, Bangladesh after defeated from the Ireland and India had to book their ticket back home. Teams like Pakistan and England had to struggle for the place in the super eight stage.

India managed only the defeat from its first two matches played in Super Eight stage and was directly knock-out. England was knocked-out by the the West Indies team. Ireland lost its three matches and left England with some prestige of getting the spot in Super Eight.

Finally, Pakistan being the F2 i.e., runner-up in Grop F will play the south Africa which are the topper of Group E. In the other side, Sri Lanka the Group F topper play agaonst the Group E runners up West Indies in the semi-finals.

Pakistan in Semi-final of T20 World Cup 2009

Match#1: Pakistan Vs South Afrrica on June 18, Thur at Nottingham

Pakistan has qualified for the semi-final stage of T20 World Cup 2009. After the win of Pakistan against the Ireland on Monday confirmed their ticket for the further stage. This is the second time in second edition of T20 World Cup. Last time Pakistan had qualified to the finals and lost against the India. But this year India is already out the tournament. Pakistan play the semi-final match against the South Africa in the semi-finals of ICC World T20 2009.

On Monday, Pakistan beat Ireland by the margin of 39 runs. After the win Pakistan are spotted in the 1st position of the Group F with 4 points. In the other hand, Sri Lanka also have four points but their net run rate is less compared to Pakistan. New Zealand have 2-points which means that they have to win Sri Lanka to qualify for the semis with some greater margin.

Pakistan tam had loose its both warm-ups against the SA and IND before the tournament. It became more criticised after they lost against the England in the first match of the tournament. Lots of pressure on the team in the match against one of the low-ranked Netherlands. But they came well enough to beat Netherlands and had a journey to the Super 8s of ICC T20 World Cup 2009.

Some amount of pressure was released as they were on Super 8s. But here also they had to face defeat against the Sri Lanka in the first match. Now Pakistan needed both the matches on their hand to qualify for further. They did that against both the New Zealand and Ireland and spotted themselves i the semi-final of ICC World Twenty20 2009.

Pakistan bowling attack seemed to be doing excellent throughout the series whereas some little bit of up-downs in the Batting is also seen. Spinners are doing more better job in the middle order whereas pacer are providing fine start to the team's bowling attack. Umer Gul and Saeed Ajmal are two top-listed wicket-taker in ICC World Twenty20 2009. Whereas in batting captain Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal are at the top level from the Pakistan team.

Pakistan had to loose some of its fine player like Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir before and during the tournament. But after the Tanvir's return, former ICL player Abdul Razzaq is back on the side and provided good all-round support till now in two matches played by him.

After its confirmation ticket to the semis, it is still undecided with whom they will play. Definitely it will be either South Africa, England or West Indies in the semi-final. Best of LUCK for the Pakistani team and Congratulations for what they achieved.

Pakistan won the super 8 match against New Zealand by 6 wickets with 46 balls remaining in the match. Umar Gul was the hero with the best bowling figures in twenty20 international cricket. Umar Gul took 5 wickets in 3 overs for 6 runs in packing New Zealand for 99. Abdul Razzaq who made a comeback took two wickets. In batting, Shahid Afridi made 29 not out.

Now its a do or die situation for India in T20 World cup. An win against England will make them alive in the series while a loss means out of T20 world cup 2009 before playing the last match. But England has been struggling in the series which is a good news for the Indians. India has lost a super 8 match and England lost in group stage against Netherlands and also in super 8 against South Africa. Roughly calculating, India are favorites for this match.

Pakistan is facing a Do or die as an win against New Zealand will keep them in the series but a loss will rule them with one more match to go. Pakistan has so far displayed a great bowling especially by spinners but the batting doesn't seem world class. Younis Khan who is the second leading scorer of World T20 has batted alone. Prediction and preview: Pakistan had entered the finals of T20 World cup 2007 after a win against NZ in semis. For me, they are still the favorites for the match. Batting needs to improve. Malik and Misbah must fire. Bowling for Pakistan seems great with Afridi, Umar Gul and Ajmal.

The good news for Pakistani fans(especially me) is that Abdul Razzaq will play the match after a long, long time. He was dropped in ICC World T20 2007 which forced him to sign for the ICL where he was one of the best players both with bat and bowl. But after being released, he has replaced Yasir Arafat. Razzaq, an all-rounder is one of the hardest hitter of ball.

The ICC World Twenty20 winner of the 2007, India had a fine start to the tournament and easily entered to the super 8s of T20 World Cup 2009. India will play its first Super Eight match against the West Indies in Group E. Group E consists of South Africa and England. The first match of Group E was between England and South Africa, where SA had a comprehensive victory over the host. The second match on the Group E is scheduled as:

India had a easily first round group which consists the Bangladesh and Ireland. They were able to get all 4-points from the matches played. They are yet to clash against the big nations in this year's ICC World Twenty20. India also had decent match against those teams. Youngsters did a very fine job.

West Indies a memorable start to the tournament in England where they defeated the Australians by a huge margin. The ideal start what the team would have wanted. West Indies had to lose its both matches in 2007 T20 World Cup and was sent back to the home before the Super Eights. This time the lights of Chris Gayle is expected to make the team more further.

Indian Team:
News from the center is that Virender Sehwag is unavailabe for the further matches in the series. This is a great lowdown for the Indian team. Dinesh Karthik will be replacing Virender Sehwag. The team instead looks very much brilliant. Many new youngsters to the side and they are performing very well. Rohit Sharma is in great touch and Pragyan Ojha is the leading wicket-taker for them.

Apart from R Sharma, Gautam Gambhir is also giving a great start to the team. The IPL campaign seems to be doing great for the team. Suresh Raina is another youngster who is in great form. Any of this top order youngsters again fires then the team will have very great start in batting. Talking about the Dhoni's recent form, he is the one who is going a side from the track. No one is unaware if his capabilities and when he fires then it gives great chance of victory. Yusuf Pathan, having yet another brilliant IPL didn't had a lot to do in the group stage but now the scenario is different, and he also should perform well.

Pragyan Ojha is doing great job with his spin attack and should continue to more ranked teams in Group E. Pace attack lead by Zaheer Khan is well supported by Ishant Sharma and RP Singh. Irfan Pathan also might be there in the squad. But the important topic is that how the opening bowler will react against the Chris Gayle after seeing his last match. They will surely watch the video many times before bowling to him.

West Indies Team:
First talking matter is the captain Chris Gayle. No suprisement if he again holds the Indian as they did again t the Australian last time. Gayle missed the match against Lanka and the team seemed to be different than they were against the Australians. Important thing is that along with his captaincy, his team really requires the allround performance from him.

Some experienced name in the squad like Sarwan and Chanderpaul should hold on the middle-order. Big all-rounders and hitters like Marshall, Fletcher, Kieron Pollard and the veteran Dwaryne Bravo. Great names in the paper and sould act themselves great from their match action.

Bowling attack in the start was the main dfference in the win and lost in the 1st round of ICC T20 2009. The opening attack from Taylor and Fidel Edwards will be important term. If they can get couple or more success in the early overs than the match will be in different feel. Chris Gayle and Suliemen Benn should hold on the spin attack in the middle overs. Bravo's accuracy and slow bowl in the end overs seems to be important aspect for the team.

All together both the teams seems to be in contender for the victory but the victory will be for those who will perform well. The match is very important match and will be release enormous amount of pressure for the fight for the place in semi-final.

Sri Lanka were the toppers in the Group C of 1st round. They have had a fantastic first round where they defeated the Australians and West Indians. On the other hand, former T20 World Cup runner-up Pakistan ad to lose against the host England and had to fight for the place in Super 8s against Netherlands.

The recent form of Sri Lanka seems to be pumped up, in all the forms from Bowling, Batting to Fielding. The experienced fellows like Sanath Jayasuriya, Murali, Dilsan and Sangakara have already shown their capabilities in past matches. The young legs of Mendis and other players have done a lot for this success. The new captain Kumar Sangakkara seems to be well fitted in his job till now. The winning of this match must be vital for both the teams. With the winning start, they have very high chance of getting to the semi-final as one of the remaining team is Ireland. England Vs South Africa - Live in Super Eight of T20 World Cup 2009

The host nation will start its super eight journey against the match against South Africa in ICC World T20. England recovered with a win against Pakistan after having a disastrous start with a loss against Netherlands. South Africa on the other hand were superb with over 100 runs win over Scotland but couldn't display good batting against New Zealand though they eventually won the match. Preview: Seeing current forms, South Africa seems to be superior in both batting and bowling. AB de Villers has been the focus of the tournament and Roelof van der Merwe has shown good bowling. The first match on super eight is between the two group F teams, Ireland and New Zealand. It is important match for the both teams. New Zealand will not take Ireland easy and they shouldn't do that either. Since, the last ICC World Cup in WI Ireland had come impressing everyone. They were also in the Super Eight of that tournament and had defeated teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. They weren't looking easier to clean-up.

In this T20 World Cup, both the teams are spotted in the second position of the 1st group stage matches. Ireland came impressive with the victory against the powerful Bangladesh. New Zealand had to lose against the South Africa in the tight match played. But Ireland's performance against the T20 champion Indiawas not as so high. Lots more needed for the side.

Johtson and two McCullum brothers will be players to be watched again if they can perform well, Ireland. Rather, there will be four total McCullum in the ground as New Zealand also have two McCullum in the squad.

T20 World Cup 2009 Super Eights

The teams for the super Eights have been nominated and the matches of super-eights will be starting form the June 11. Two teams from each group that makes eight teams have qualified for the super-eight matches. The eight teams are further divided in two groups i.e., Group E and F. Talking about the selected teams, some suprises could be seen. First surprise is the missing Australia in the both groups. In the 1st round Australia was along Sri Lanka and West Indies. Australia had to loose both its matches and was out of the tournament. Another part is Bangladesh, who was also defeated in its both match against India and Ireland. This is the Ireland's second chance in Super Eights. Ireland was in super Eights of ICC World Cup 2007 in WI. Netherlands, who had impressive victory against England was knock-out by Pakistan. All three teams in Group B had same points but the Net Run Rate made Dutch out of series. South Africa topped group D along with New Zealand in second spot. Scotland lost its both match and was ruled out before the Super 8s.

The veterans against the Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies will play for the group top spot here in Nottingham. Both the teams have defeated Australia in their initial matches. SL an WI have already qualified for the 2nd round of ICC World Twenty20 2009. The match will be played for the prestige and will want the win in order to build up the confidence in the series.

West Indies defeated Australia by a huge margin. Thanks to the great batting from the Captain Chris Gayle. Gayle seemed to be unstoppable throughout the match. Unlike other matches, there was somebody giving the support to the aggressive Gayle. Fletcher scored a half century giving the opening stand of 130 runs between Gayle and himself. Bowling attack was equally great. Two early wickets in the first over from Taylor and brilliant pace-attack till the end. Something that needs to improve is the spin-attack. Benn and Gayle didn't have great time with the ball in the hand.

Sri Lanka was always in the top in the match against Australia. Talking about their bowling attack, the restriction of Australia to 159 was very much meant bowlers did great job in that ground. Ajantha Mendis showed his talent yet another time and picked three wickets for 20 runs. It seemed no-one was able to pick Mendis and his accuracy stopped the flow of runs. Jayasuriya was looking in bad touch with both ball and bat. As his duty is to take the team into very good start but could not establish well. Dilshan seemed unstoppable as he batted beautifully giving continuity to the form he got in IPL. Captain Sangakkara who is great in every form of cricket made got the victory for the Lankans.

The first thing to be watched will always be the Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya. Then, Mendis and Suleman Benn, Malingha and Edwards, Dilshan and Fletcher and others too.

Interesting to see will be that the team will be unchanged from both sides or they will give chance to the other players in the dressing room as they are already ahead in the series.

After a loss against England, Pakistan are in the danger of early exit from ICC World T20 2009. Now only a win by more than 25 runs or before 18 overs(if batting second) can qualify Pakistan for the second stage of the tournament.
